Golden Gate Bridge
Basic information
The Golden Gate Bridge is a 1.6km (1 mile) suspension bridge that crosses the Golden Gate, this bridge connects the San Franciso, California to Marin County. It is one of the most internationally recognized figure of California and the US, the bridge carries 6 lanes of pedestrians and bicycles as well as the U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1.
The engineer Joseph Strauss designed the bridge in 1917, and was declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World. Construction on the bridge started on the 5th January 1933 and was completed on the 19th April 1937, the bridge was finally opened on the 27th May 1937 and was at that time the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world,(span of 1,280m or 4,200 feet and a height of 227m or 746 feet). It carries about 110,000 traffic daily across the steel bridge.
